This position is responsible for managing social media accounts and the website for the Village of Palmetto Bay, engaging residents through effective promotional and informational campaigns, and creating meaningful content intended to keep residents and the general public informed of Village activities.

This position requires professionalism, initiative and creativity to implement and disseminate relevant information to the community, media, and Village departments, applying journalistic and public relations practices and techniques.

Works under the direction and general supervision of the Human Resources & Communications Director and exercises no supervisory responsibility. Work is performed with considerable amount of independent judgment and discretion.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Responsible for managing all social media accounts for the Village and engaging residents by maintaining strategic social media presence.
  • Monitors online and social media activity, coordinating with other departments to effectively respond to inquiries and/or complaints as needed.
  • Generates, edits and publishes information related to the Village and shares content that is of interest to residents and the general public and that supports the public welfare.
  • Captures, produces and edits videos and photos for posting on social media channels and the Village website, as applicable.
  • Develops social media campaigns through innovative and engaging social media content, graphics, video, and postings consistent with Village goals, priorities, standards, and policies.
  • Evaluates and recommends appropriate social media content and distribution channels based on latest trends, information and audience.
  • Meets with other departments to identify their social media needs and ensure their goals are met; recommends appropriate media strategies to accomplish maximum exposure and visibility.
  • Creates and manages the Village’s website content; ensures that all information is timely posted and accurate; reviews content for readability and proofreads to avoid grammatical and/or spelling errors.
  • Assists in developing and producing short format Public Service Announcements (PSA) and other informational videos for public distribution.
  • Serves as anchor/co-anchor for the Village’s televised news segments and other video programming, as necessary.
  • Assists with the livestreaming of public meetings and select Village events; assists with video production.
  • Manages contractor/consultant responsible for the maintenance of the Village’s AV system, ensuring the proper operation of all AV equipment. Tests equipment in advance of scheduled meetings.
  • Drafts and releases official Village statements, press releases, advisories, etc.., as needed and directed.
  • May be assigned special community relations projects by the Department Director or designee.
  • Performs specialized research of varying complexity. Compiles data and prepares special and periodic reports and studies as requested by the Department Director or designee.
  • Attends meetings to gather information on Village projects, events and services.
  • May be required to work evenings and weekends to cover public meetings, events and programs related to Village operations.
  • Performs any other related duties as requested by the Department Director.
Minimum Qualifications
  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Public Administration, Journalism, Marketing, Communications, or related field from an accredited college.
  • A minimum of three (3) years of relative work experience which demonstrate a broad knowledge of all aspects of media and marketing, government experience is preferred.
  • Related experience beyond the required years may substitute educational requirement on a year for year basis.
  • Must hold a valid State of Florida driver’s license.
  • Must be computer literate with knowledge of Microsoft Office programs, proficiency with Adobe Premiere and Photoshop a plus.

Other Required Competencies:

  • Computer and photography ability.
  • Proficiency in oral and written communications. Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred.
  • Ability to maintain effective and courteous working relationships with the local media, general public, co-workers, and elected officials.
  • Ability to gather and compile information effectively.
  • Ability to maintain high ethical and professional standards.
  • Ability to work nights and weekends, as needed.
  • Must be able to set priorities and meet deadlines
