Johns Hopkins University Carey Business School is seeking a media savvy, detail oriented individual to join our busy marketing team as a Social Media Specialist.

The Social Media Specialist will actively engage multiple audiences via social and mobile media to increase visibility, interactivity, and brand awareness.

Reporting to the Senior Social Media Specialist and in consultation with the Senior Director of Strategic Communications, this position will support the strategy-driven execution of campaigns and day-to- day activity on the Carey Business School’s social media channels—Twitter/X, Meta (Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp), LinkedIn, YouTube, WeChat, etc., developing compelling social media content in alignment with social media key performance indicators and business goals, including those to drive users to the school’s website, enhance brand awareness, strengthen the Carey social media community, promote events and programs, recruit students, and increase the sense of connection to the school in its extended community.

The Social Media Specialist will be a creative and disciplined social content manager with a desire for a highly active, hands-on role. The position involves creative/visual storytelling solutions and ideas; content creation; managing social listening, tracking/analytics; and reporting to inform social media strategy, engagement, and execution. With oversight from the Senior Social Media Specialist, this individual will also implement a student ambassador program and be responsible for coordinating ambassador content, and will steward a robust, authentic user-generated content campaign.

The Social Media Specialist must be flexible and willing to work occasional evenings and weekends. This position may be required to travel to offsite locations including but not limited to Johns Hopkins in DC.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

Day-to-day Social Media (50%)

  • Supporting the Senior Social Media Specialist, manage a high volume of overall day-to-day social and digital media presence.
  • Contribute to establishment and consistency of brand tone and voice on each channel, including fidelity to brand in page design, photos, and graphical, multimedia, and animated elements.
  • Ensure that consistency of branding and positioning of the school are expressed through all social media communications.
  • Manage community engagement for channels including Facebook, Twitter/X, Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube, and other web-based and digital sites.
  • Collaborate with the Marketing & Communications team to integrate social-rst content and activities with overall integrated marketing strategies and goals.
  • Stay familiar with the most up-to-date uses of video, photography, and social media trends for content creation.
  • Support coordination of social media calendar with overall Marketing and Communications content calendar.
  • Support strategic initiatives to enhance the school’s reputation among influencers, employers, and other external publics.
  • Support social media strategy for Admissions, Career and Life Design, and Student Services teams to advance student recruitment and student support eorts.
  • Work collaboratively with Communications & Marketing, Development, and other Carey sta and faculty, as well as outside vendors.

Student Ambassadors & User Generated Content (UGC) (30%)

  • Manage the development and execution of the school’s user-generated content, including that contributed by students and faculty.
  • Track and collect usage examples for content creation. Analyze data for content optimization.
  • Develop and manage a student ambassador program to leverage Carey’s most representative and authentic student voices across all appropriate platforms throughout the year with compelling, energized, platform-appropriate content.

Tracking & Reporting (15%)

  • Manage social listening and analytics tracking and analysis to inform work; establish goals and metrics; and evaluate and recommend tools and resources to support social media engagement and execution.
  • Stay abreast of competitor social media activities, reporting on trends and new developments in the social media industry.
  • Measure campaign performance and evaluate outcomes to translate social performance into clear, actionable insights and new techniques.
  • Measure and track social analytics on multiple platforms, effectiveness of strategies, tactics, and campaigns and recommend modications to achieve goals and improve ROI of digital marketing initiatives.
  • Produce and share weekly and monthly KPI reports and progress in clear and concise formats.

Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Demonstrated expertise in the social media and digital communications environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to think creatively and critically in problem-solving and project implementation.
  • Skilled, versatile writer and critical thinker capable of crafting compelling, authentic messages and copy.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of social and digital analytics, including but not limited to Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, and LinkedIn, with a high level of skill in using social media for effective communication.
  • Ability to operate in web, social media, and digital spaces on behalf of the school to promote the brand and communicate with and address the needs of multiple audiences—including proactive communications and engaging in conversations on behalf of the school.
  • Advanced level of proficiency in writing and organizing content for electronic media, including the nuances involved in writing on behalf of academia.
  • Thorough understanding of brand management and appropriate expression of brand and graphic identity in electronic communications.
  • Ability to stay abreast of and effectively use new modes of communication, social industry, and digital marketing trends.
  • Aptitude, initiative, and energy for finding and communicating school and student news that will interest and engage the school’s audiences.
  • Ability to understand and integrate relevant current events and news stories in daily social media communications.
  • Ability to assess the effectiveness of social media activity and channel optimization for maximum reach.
  • Ability to work independently, manage multiple projects simultaneously, organize workflow, set priorities, thrive in an extremely fast-paced environment, consistently meet deadlines, and adhere to brand identity and editorial standards.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with other team members and colleagues at all levels across the school

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in related field
  • Two years related experience
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula

Preferred Qualifications

  • 3 years of demonstrable success in social media management and campaigns including thorough understanding of key analytics and listening tools strongly preferred
  • Experience with a CRM, such as Sprout Social or HubSpot.
